Huntsman spiders are recognisable by their flattened body shape and long hairy legs that point forwards and bend backwards. This flattened shape allows them to slip into cracks and crevices in rocks and logs and under the bark of trees which is where they are commonly found. Some species are often found in family groups sheltering under the same rock or piece of bark. Huntsman spiders are found all over Australia and are commonly encountered in houses where their large size and speed often cause alarm to the unsuspecting occupants. They often prey on the insects that have been attracted to household lights left on at night, but their natural habitat is usually the surrounding trees. They are not very aggressive and prefer to run swiftly and find a place to hide when disturbed.
Unusually for spiders, female and male huntsmen appear to show affection for one another and during mating the male is rarely attacked which is common in other spider species. After mating the female huntsman constructs a brood chamber where she may lay several hundred eggs in an egg sac which she places in the chamber. Huntsman spiders are very maternal and the female will stay with the egg sac until the spiderlings hatch. She may allow them to climb over her body but does not transport them around like female wolf spiders. They will remain together for several weeks until the young are strong enough to disperse and fend for themselves.
